ABOUT THE ERUV

What is an Eruv?

An eruv is essentially a continuous enclosure around a community. It can range from a few homes to a an entire city. The purpose of the eruv is to allow Jews to carry objects on the Sabbath according to Halacha (Jewish law).

The enclosure, or borders, can be done with strings, fences, gates, walls or natural structures such as a mountain or impassible foliage.

The Agoura Eruv is special, in that only a few hundred yards of the borders are string.

Who Pays for the Eruv?

The Agoura Hills Eruv is paid for completely by inviduals from the Agoura community. No city, county or state funds are used to pay for anything.

We wish to thank all those individuals who have contributed to the eruv fund. An eruv costs money to maintain and insure, and ongoing funds are needed. If you are interested in donating any amount, please visite:

chabadconejo.com and donate, specifying that it is for the eruv.

Why is it so Important?

Without an eruv, Jewish law forbids the carrying of an object in the public domain. This includes pushing strollers or wheelchairs, carrying young children, and even carrying a set of keys. Essentially, families with infants or a grandparent in a wheelchair are unable to join in the synagogue on the holy Sabbath without there being an eruv.
